Possible Song Choices
Today I presented my possible song choices to the class.
Class Feedback
For song 3, the feedback was generally negative in that the song was a bit too "depressing", which I actually agree to. The feedback for song 2 was the most liked out of the three. Ideas for the music video included shooting in a roller disco or an arcade, to bring out the "fun factor" in the song. Song 1 didn't get either negative nor positive feedback, it was discussed that song 2 was the one to choose.

Andrew Goodwin's Theory
Today we learnt about Andrew Goodwin's theory, which is basically a list of what a music video is made up of. I agreed with it to an extent as obviously, different people have different ideas. However, this could help me in terms of how to construct my video and what to put in it.

Possible Song Choices

Andrew Goodwin's Theory

Andrew Goodwin identified 6 key features of a music video. These features were:
1.       Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band)
2.       There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying or contradicting)
3.       There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying or contradicting)
4.       The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close-ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work
5.       There is frequent reference to the notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body
6.       There is often intertextual reference (to films, TV programmes, other music videos, etc.)
I believe these key features to be somewhat correct and could be useful as a guideline for my own music video. Not every artist has all of these things incorporated in just one of their music videos, for example, I feel the amount of intertextual reference in music videos in this day and age is limited where as the “voyeuristic treatment of the female body” is incredibly increasing recently, especially in the noughties (2000 onwards). I feel this because a majority of videos have at least 1 woman wearing next to nothing where as a minority take inspiration from films/TV programmes, etc, one example of a music video with intertextual reference would be Geri Halliwell’s “Raining Men” as it’s based on Fame with the dancing act.
There are also 3 types of music videos: performance-based; narrative-based; concept-based. Performance-based music videos are when there are stage performances or the band/singer is videoed singing and/or dancing. These are becoming increasingly popular, like BeyoncĂ© with “Single Ladies”. Narrative-based music videos are when the video has a story to it, for example a music video like Taylor Swift's "Mine" video as it is going through the process of her life with her boyfriend/fiance/husband. Concept-based is a music video that has lots of special effects like Red Hot Chilli Pepper's "Californication".

What Music Means To Me Reflection
By doing the "What Music Means To Me" task, it made me realise that music does not only influence emotion, but can be socially and culturally inspiring too. As well as bringing out these emotions, such as happiness and sadness, it can remind you of friends and family, and can also remind you of a place or to make you feel proud of the culture you're from. Watching other people's presentations showed me how music had an effect/influence on their lives and how their choices meant something to them. It opened my eyes to the variety of music that was chosen and how the students could relate to that music in an emotional, social or cultural way.

Unseen Music Video
By listening to the song, closing my eyes and using my imagination, it allowed me to create a music video in my head to go along with the song. Although my ideas were not completely the same as the actual video, there was a similarity in that the start of the real video is when they're lying on the ground in what looks to be like a countryside, a setting that I had thought up in my ideas, also I had a performance aspect in mind, as well as a narrative one, and the whole of the actual video is performance based. This task helped me open my mind and visualise possible music video scenes and relating them to the lyrics of the song.
